In Below U.S., Speedy, as he is nicknamed by his friends, seeks to find comfort within his complex identities. Labeled a gringo in Latin America and a Latino in the U.S., he experiences a state of perpetual banishment that makes him feel like an outsider abroad, at home, and even in his own skin. Zorro, Rico Suave, and other iconic stereotypes along with a montage of community voices show up to help or hinder Speedy in wrestling with these ill-fitting representations.  Read more…

 

Ribbons to Roots

This performance is the culmination of an innovative yearlong course focused on field research, facilitated dialogue, and community engagement.  Collaboratively written by University of Washington students from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds, the stories presented in Ribbons to Roots are based on oral histories gathered from members of Seattle’s diverse and vibrant Vietnamese, Cambodian, Filipino, and Indonesian communities.  Read more…

 

 

Choice and the Hunter’s Machine

This is a contemporary interpretation of the Mahabharata epic created in collaboration with Indonesia’s world famous Black Umbrella Theater Company. The piece debuted in Jakarta, Indonesia in 2003 and was invited to the Jakart International Arts Festival and toured to the Bandung Performing Arts Academy in West Java. This piece was a large-scale collaboration, involving 30 performers and designers.  Read more…

 

 

work under compuWork Created Under Compulsion

Kinetic projections, multimedia theater and live soundscape break apart stories inspired by a soldier, an artist,  a dancer and a queen. In work created under compulsion, Director/Co-Creator Tikka Sears, an Artist Trust Fellowship recipient, offers audiences reflections on these questions in a multimedia production that features movement and projection. The play was written by co-creator Manuel Castro and incorporates video interviews that are put in dialogue with onstage characters.  Read more…
